Fruity Green Smoothies

It’s summertime and that means it’s the perfect time to blend up a delicious, fresh smoothie! Even if you’re a leafy green hater, this recipe might just make you love them! This basic smoothie template is one that I’ve used at several cooking demonstrations and have surprising turned green smoothie skeptics into believers. The mix between the naturally sweet fruit and nutrient-packed greens makes for the perfect, energy-boosting smoothie combo.

This recipe template is great because it can be super flexible. You can choose various milk options or sweetener options to cater to different dietary preferences. If you find that the smoothie is sweet enough with just the fruit, you can take out the sweetener all together. For the additional add-in options, I typically like to throw in some chia seeds and flax meal for some added fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, but the options are endless. Find that you don’t like the more bitter leafy greens like kale? Swap it out for greens with a milder flavor like spinach or collard greens. Want a thicker smoothie? Add a spoonful of greek yogurt to it. Just ran out of apple juice? Use another kind of fruit juice or use a whole apple instead.

This is a perfect recipe for meal prep too. Prepare the fruits and leafy greens, throw them into a zip lock bag, and store it in the freezer. When you are ready to make the smoothie, add all of the other ingredients. Omit the ice here since the frozen fruit and greens will act as the ice.

To achieve the beautiful layering displayed in the pictures, blend the fruit, banana, ice, and half of the liquid and pour it into the bottom of your glass. Then, blend the leafy greens, sweetener, add-ins, ice, and the other half of the liquid and pour it over the fruit layer. With a straw, gently stir the smoothie along the sides of the glass to create the fruity green swirl effect that is sure to impress.

From the basic smoothie template, I have developed three of my favorite flavor variations–Strawberry Kale, Peach Spinach, and Blueberry Swiss Chard. I tend to make the Strawberry Kale Smoothie more at the beginning of the summer, the Blueberry Swiss Chard Smoothie towards July, and the Peach Spinach Smoothie more towards the end of the summer– based on when the fruit and leafy greens are in season. Feel free to get creative and make your own smoothie combination from the flexible template (scroll to the bottom for the basic template!).

So it’s time to get out in the sunshine and soak up that Vitamin D, shop the local farmers’ market, and grab some leafy greens and fruit because this refreshing Fruit Green Smoothie recipe is one you’ll have to try. Enjoy!
