What is a protein mug cake?

A protein mug cake is a single-serving cake made in a mug, typically using protein powder to give it a higher-protein profile. It’s the perfect sweet treat when you don’t want to bake a full cake (or do dishes). You just mix the ingredients right in a mug, microwave it for 30–45 seconds, and voilà—you’ve got cake. This version calls for oreos to give it that cookies and cream flare.

Is it healthy?

As a registered dietitian, I love making better-for-you twists on desserts. This mug cake delivers satisfying flavor and functional nutrition in one bite:

  • Protein powder adds 11 grams of protein per serving supporting muscle recovery and satiety.
  • Oat flour adds fiber and whole grain goodness to help balance blood sugar.
  • Oreos bring the signature flavor and crunch, with a smaller portion size that satisfies without going overboard.

Research supports that higher-protein snacks can help reduce cravings and promote fullness throughout the day.

What ingredients do you need?

This recipe is super simple—just 7 ingredients and a mug!

  • Protein powder (vanilla, chocolate, or cookies and cream): Pick your favorite! Chocolate makes it rich, vanilla keeps it light, and cookies and cream adds extra Oreo flavor.
  • Oat flour: Keeps the cake soft and tender.
  • Crushed Oreos: One in the batter and another for topping if you want to go full cookie mode.
  • Maple syrup: Adds just a touch of sweetness.
  • Baking powder: Gives the cake a nice fluffy lift.
  • Vanilla extract: Enhances the cookie flavor.
  • Milk of your choice: Almond, soy, dairy, or oat all work beautifully here.

How do you make an Oreo protein mug cake?

You’re 5 minutes away from a satisfying dessert. Here’s how to make it:

  1. Add protein powder, oat flour, maple syrup, baking powder, vanilla extract, and milk to a large mug. Stir until it forms a smooth batter.
  2. Crush one Oreo Thin into a fine powder and gently fold it into the batter.
  3. Microwave the mug cake for 30–45 seconds, until mostly dry to the touch and cakey in texture. Let cool for 30 seconds.
  4. Top with extra crushed Oreo, a spoonful of yogurt, or whipped cream if you’d like. Then dig in while it’s still warm!

Customize it your way

Like all of my recipes, this Oreo protein mug cake is completely customizable. Choose what ingredients you want to use:

  • Protein powder of your choice: We love using Vanilla, Chocolate, or Cookies and cream flavored protein powder. Aim for one that provides 10 to 20 grams of protein per scoop.
  • Milk of your choice: Any kind of milk will work here—almond, oat, soy, or dairy.
  • Toppings of your choice: Try Greek yogurt for a creamy finish, whipped cream for a treat, or more crushed Oreos for crunch.

Recipe tips and troubleshooting

  • Serving: Enjoy your mug cake straight from the mug while it’s warm. It’s soft, melty, and perfect right after cooking.
  • Troubleshooting: If your cake feels underdone, pop it back in for 5–10 seconds. If it’s too dry, reduce microwave time slightly or add an extra splash of milk next time.
  • Scaling: Want to share? Double the ingredients and divide between two mugs. Microwave individually for the best results.

Can you make these protein mug cakes ahead of time?

These oreo protein mug cakes are best made fresh, but you can pre-mix your dry ingredients (protein powder, oat flour, baking powder, and crushed Oreo) in small jars for an easy grab-and-go option. When ready, just add milk, syrup, and vanilla extract, then microwave for an instant, protein-packed dessert.

Nutrition Note: This is an estimate provided by an online nutrition calculator. Nutrition may vary depending on ingredients used. This calculation is for vanilla protein powder and 2% milk. This calculation does not include toppings. For more nutrition information, seek a professional registered dietitian’s advice.
Mug Size Note: You want to use a medium to large mug because the cake will puff up in the microwave when it cooks. Using a larger mug prevents it from spilling over the sides.
