What is a vegan smoothie bowl?
Smoothies bowls are a thicker version of smoothies served in a bowl with delicious toppings sprinkled over top. To make it vegan, you would omit or substitute any dairy or animal products.
Customize it your way
These smoothie bowl recipes are vegan so they contain no animal products or provide vegan substitutions. However, you can easily customize it to fit your dietary preferences.
Yogurt – Many smoothie bowl recipes call for yogurt to add creaminess. Vegan friendly options include almond, oat, or coconut yogurt. If you are not vegan, you can use Greek yogurt or regular yogurt.
Milk – In order to break down the frozen ingredients, smoothie bowl recipes will call for a splash of milk. Vegan options would include plant-based milk such as almond, coconut, oat, rice, or soy milk. Non-vegan options would be dairy milk like skim milk or whole milk.
Sweetener – Some recipes may call for a touch of sweetness to compliment the fruit and greens. Vegan friendly sweeteners include agave, maple syrup, or date syrup. Feel free to also use honey if you are not vegan.
Are smoothie bowls healthy?
As a dietitian, I love how smoothie bowls are filled with vibrant fruits and vegetables like berries, beets, cauliflower, spinach, and bananas. All these different colors represent different nutrients that keep us healthy. For example:
Blueberries – Blueberries are rich in anthocyanin which provide anti-inflammatory effects.
Spinach – Spinach contain a carotenoid called lutein which helps protect against damage to the eyes.
Bananas – Bananas are packed with beneficial antioxidants, potassium, and dietary fiber.
If you have a goal to include more fruits and vegetables in your day, smoothie bowls are a great way to go!
