  • Healthy: Using a tortilla as the base makes for a lighter pizza that’s just as satisfying. Plus, loading up on veggies adds a nutritional punch too.

What is tortilla pizza?

Tortilla pizza is a quick and versatile alternative to traditional pizza. You’ll use a tortilla as the base instead of dough. It’s perfect to throw together for a super easy lunch or dinner.

Is tortilla pizza healthy?

Tortilla pizza can be a healthier alternative to traditional pizza. We’re using tortillas to create a super thin, lower carb crust. Then, you’ll pile on a generous portion of vegetables for vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Plus, we’re using Beyond Steak which is a nourishing protein option, created using a blend of faba bean protein and wheat gluten.

What is Beyond Steak?

I tried Beyond Steak last year and absolutely fell in love with its taste, texture, and nutrition.

Beyond Steak is a plant-based protein designed to mimic the taste, texture, and cooking experience of traditional beef steak. When you flip over the ingredients, you’ll notice a line of simple ingredients including faba bean protein, wheat gluten, and pomegranate concentrate. It’s truly such a great option for those looking to reduce their meat consumption or even those looking for a fun, new protein source.

Is Beyond Steak healthy?

As a registered dietitian, I love incorporating this plant-based steak into meals because it provides 21 grams of protein and just 1 gram of saturated fat per serving. It’s also filled with beneficial nutrients like potassium, iron, and fiber. It’s even certified by the American Heart Association’s heart-check program, meeting the strict nutrition guidelines to be considered a heart-healthy food!

Recent research has shown replacing red meat with high-quality plant protein sources including plant-based meat may help lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels. Other studies have demonstrated diets rich in plant foods can potentially reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer.

You can find Beyond Steak in the frozen section of your local grocery store. For this recipe we’re adding it straight from frozen onto the pizza. For most other recipes, you’ll simply pan saute it or air fry it for 5-6 minutes before enjoying.

Make a heart pizza for Valentine’s Day

For a special Valentine’s Day meal, you can create heart-shaped tortilla pizzas. Print out a large stencil and cut around it to shape your tortilla into a heart. Then, follow the same directions to create a fun Valentine’s Day pizza that’s as delightful to look at as it is to eat.

What ingredients do you need?

  • Tortillas (8 inches): The perfect canvas for your pizza masterpiece. Its size ensures a satisfying serving without overdoing it. We often use whole wheat tortillas for their added fiber and nutrients.
  • Pizza Sauce: Use 2 tablespoons to spread as the base. Feel free to explore other sauce options like pesto or white sauce for a twist too.
  • Cheese: Try mozzarella, cheddar, or a blend. Vegan options work great too!
  • Vegetables: Feel free to use just 1 veggie or a variety. This is a perfect way to use up any random bits of veggies in your fridge.
  • Beyond Steak: A hearty plant-based protein addition. We love to keep this in our freezer at all times for a convenient protein option.
  • Italian Seasoning: This seasoning helps bring all the pizza flavors together.

How do you make air fryer tortilla pizza?

Forget spending hours making homemade pizza. This recipe comes together in 10 minutes or less. Here’s how:

1. Spread sauce

To start, spread a thin layer of pizza sauce over the entire surface of a large tortilla, leaving a small border around the edges to prevent the sauce from spilling over.

Spread sauce on tortilla

2. Add cheese

Next, sprinkle a generous amount of cheese over the sauce. Whether you prefer mozzarella, cheddar, or a vegan alternative, the cheese acts as the glue that holds all your toppings in place.

3. Add veggies

Following the cheese, layer your chosen vegetables on top. Bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms offer a fantastic mix of textures and flavors, but feel free to get creative with whatever veggies you have on hand.

4. Top with Beyond Steak

For the protein, add Beyond Steak. This adds a hearty element to your pizza and is perfect to enjoy for a meatless meal.

Add plant based steak on tortilla

5. Air fry until crispy

Finally, place your tortilla pizza in the air fryer and cook until the edges are crispy and the cheese is perfectly melted, usually about 6 minutes. This cooking method ensures a crispy base and bubbly top.

6. Air fry until crispy

Letting the pizza cool allows it to get extra crispy. Try not to skip this step. If you don’t have a cookie rack, you can even just let it cool in the air fryer basket.

Recipe tips and tricks

  • Serving Tips: Complement your air fryer pizza with a side of chopped leafy green salad or veggie sticks and dip.
  • Troubleshooting Tips: Make sure to follow the amounts and not overload your tortilla. This helps prevent it from becoming soggy.
  • Double Tortillas: For those seeking a thicker crust, try using two tortillas on the bottom. Apply a thin layer of sauce (1 tablespoon) on the first tortilla, then press another tortilla on top and continue with the standard 2 tablespoons of sauce.
  • Scaling Tips: Feel free to make as many individual pizzas as you need. You’ll just need to cook them in batches.

Can I cook it in an oven or skillet?

If you don’t have an air fryer, don’t worry! You can still enjoy delicious tortilla pizzas by using an oven or skillet. Here’s how:

Cook tortilla pizza in the oven

  1. Set your oven to 425°F.
  2. On a baking sheet, lay out the tortilla and top with sauce, your choice of cheese, vegetables, and Beyond Steak.
  3. Place in the oven for about 8 minutes, or until the edges are crispy and the cheese has melted.
  4. Before serving, let it rest on the pan outside of the oven for 2 minutes.

Cook tortilla pizza on a skillet

  1. Warm up a skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Place the tortilla in the skillet, cooking for 2 minutes on one side to get it crispy.
  3. Flip the tortilla over and top with sauce, cheese, veggies, and Beyond Steak.
  4. Cook for another 2 minutes or until the cheese is melted and gooey.

Customize it your way

Like all of my other recipes, this tortilla pizza recipe is completely customizable. You get to choose what cheese and veggies you want to use.

  • Cheese of your choice: Use mozzarella for a classic, melty experience; cheddar for a sharper taste; or a vegan cheese alternative for those following a dairy-free diet.
  • Veggies of your choice: The options are truly endless here. Just be sure to use a quick-cooking option rather than a harder vegetable like sweet potato or carrots.
  • Other sauce options: Beyond traditional pizza sauce, you could also try pesto, BBQ, or a creamy white sauce to mix things up.

Can’t decide what to top your pizza with? Here are a few classic pizza combos you’ll love:

  • Pizza sauce, vegan mozzarella cheese, diced broccoli
  • Pesto sauce, mozzarella cheese, diced tomatoes
  • BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese, red onion
  • Enchilada sauce, mexican cheese, bell peppers

Can I make it ahead of time?

Absolutely! Assemble your pizza but don’t cook it. Store it in the fridge until you’re ready, then follow the cooking instructions. Perfect for meal prep!

How do I store leftovers?

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days in the fridge. For reheating, pop it back in the air fryer for 2 minutes to restore its crispy texture.
