What is a bagel sandwich?

Bagel sandwiches are often enjoyed for breakfast and feature sweet or savory fillings tucked between the halves of a toasted bagel.

For us, it’s a delicious trip down memory lane, reminding us of New York City’s vibrant streets in the morning. Whether you’re craving a bagel sandwich for nostalgia or flavor–get ready to enjoy it fully.

Is this easy bagel breakfast sandwich healthy?

Absolutely! This Easy Bagel Breakfast Sandwich is a great way to kickstart your day with a nutritious meal.

While bagels are often criticized for their high carb content, they can actually be part of a healthy diet. Carbohydrates are essential for providing energy to both your body and brain. As a dietitian, I just recommend balancing it out with other elements like protein, healthy fats, and colorful veggies. This balance helps you feel fuller longer and promotes stable blood sugar levels.

Here’s a few other health highlights:

  • Avocado adds heart-healthy monounsaturated fats
  • Leafy Greens contribute fiber, vitamin C & K, and calcium
  • Egg Patties provide lean protein and extra veggies

Are these egg patties healthy?

As a dietitian, I absolutely adore the Veggies Made Great line of products. They’re motto is veggies come first and veggies are always their first ingredient… so cool!

They make a variety of products like sweet muffins, savory frittatas, and these heat-and-eat egg patties. My favorite flavor is the Garden Vegetable Egg Patty! This patty features zucchini as the first ingredient alongside other veggies like tomatoes and carrots, providing a good dose of vitamins and minerals. Each patty has just 70 calories while packing in 6 grams of satisfying protein.

You can find these patties in the frozen section at Target–check out the store locator to see where they are near you. They’ve also given me a unique offer for Buy One Get One Free product at all stores – YAY! Click here to use my link and stock up to have them ready for busy mornings!

Recipe tips and tricks

  • Serving Tips: This bagel sandwich is pretty filling on its own but you could always pair it with a side of fruit or a smoothie too.
  • Troubleshooting Tips: If your avocado is not ripe, place it in a paper bag with a banana overnight to speed up the ripening process.
  • Scaling Tips: This recipe is easy to multiply for family breakfasts or meal prep. Just repeat the instructions to make as many bagels as you need.

Customize it your way

Like all of my other recipes, this bagel sandwich is completely customizable. You get to choose what type of bagel, cheese, greens, and sauce you want to use.

  • Bagel of your choice: plain, whole wheat, everything, asiago, or sesame
  • Cheese of your choice: cheddar, swiss, provolone, colby jack, or muenster
  • Greens of your choice: spinach, arugula, kale, sprouts, or chard
  • Sauce of your choice: hot sauce, mustard, whipped cream cheese, mayo, or chili crunch

Can you make this sandwich ahead of time?

Absolutely, making this bagel sandwich ahead of time is a great idea for those busy mornings. If you’re prepping in advance, skip toasting the bagel to avoid it becoming too hard when reheating.

To make ahead of time: Simply assemble the sandwich with all your chosen ingredients, then wrap it tightly in foil and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days. When you’re ready to eat, heat in an air fryer or toaster oven for 4-5 minutes at 350ºF until warm and crispy.

How do I store leftovers?

This bagel is best enjoyed fresh. But if you end up with extras after toasting, store the bagel in the fridge then reheat by unwrapping the foil and air frying at 350ºF for 4-5 minutes.
